CIAA Basketball Tournament

Charlotte, NC

The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Tournament is one of the largest annual events in Charlotte — and one of the biggest HBCU gatherings in the country. Basketball, parties, step shows, and Black excellence on full display.

Tip: Book your hotel at least 3 months out. The city fills up fast and prices spike the week of the tournament.

North Carolina Jazz Festival

Wilmington, NC
February 6–8, 2027

One of the longest-running jazz festivals in the Southeast, the NC Jazz Festival brings world-class musicians to Wilmington's historic downtown venues every February. Intimate settings, incredible talent.

Tip: The late-night jam sessions at the after-parties are where the real magic happens — ask locals where to go.

Spoleto Festival USA

Charleston, SC
May 22 – June 7, 2027

One of the most celebrated performing arts festivals in the US, Spoleto fills Charleston's historic venues with opera, theater, dance, and jazz for 17 days every spring. The Piccolo Spoleto fringe festival runs concurrently with free events.

Tip: The free Piccolo Spoleto events in Marion Square are just as good as the ticketed shows — and the people-watching is unbeatable.

Juneteenth Charlotte Celebration

Charlotte's official Juneteenth celebration in Marshall Park draws tens of thousands for live music, food vendors, art installations, and community programming. One of the largest Juneteenth events in the Southeast.

Tip: Arrive early for the morning ceremony — the keynote speakers are always worth hearing.

Taste of Charlotte

June 6–8, 2027

Charlotte's premier food festival takes over Uptown for a weekend of tastings, chef demos, and live entertainment. Dozens of Black-owned restaurants participate — it's the best way to eat your way through the city in one weekend.

Tip: The Friday evening session is less crowded and the weather is usually perfect. Skip Saturday afternoon if you can.

Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor Festival

Beaufort, SC
October 10–12, 2026

A multi-day celebration of Gullah Geechee culture along the South Carolina coast. Sweetgrass basket weaving, traditional cooking demonstrations, storytelling, music, and guided heritage tours of the Sea Islands.

Tip: The Saturday morning boat tour to Daufuskie Island sells out weeks in advance — register early.

Moja Arts Festival

Charleston, SC
October 2–12, 2026

Charleston's annual celebration of African American and Caribbean arts and culture. Theater, dance, visual art, film, and music spread across venues throughout the city for two weeks every fall.

Tip: The opening night gala at the Gaillard Center is a highlight — dress up and make a night of it.

NCCU Homecoming

Durham, NC
October 17–19, 2026

North Carolina Central University's homecoming is one of the most spirited in the CIAA — a full weekend of step shows, tailgates, the homecoming game, and a concert that draws national acts.

Tip: The Friday night step show is the highlight of the weekend. Get there early for good seats.

Every Friday evening at Pritchard Park, Asheville's legendary drum circle brings together musicians, dancers, and community members for a free, joyful celebration. A beloved Asheville tradition for over 20 years.
